Sometimes we forget that Jesus was a rebel in His time. His teachings amazed the crowds because they were so counter-culture, and ran against the grain of what was conventional wisdom of the day. Jesus awed people with His perspective on religion, relationships and personal devotion. He called people, not to a minimum standard of righteousness, but to a totally devoted life of commitment. Jesus asked people in the first century, what He still asks today -- Will you trust Me with a radical faith? The prospect is scary ... the rewards are out of this world.
