How To Be An Overcomer

"Overcoming Ourselves"

James 3:15-16

For jealousy and selfishness are not God's kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and motivated by the Devil. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and every kind of evil. James 3:15-16 [NLT]

I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Romans 7:18 [NIV]

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, Galatians 5:19-20 [NLT]

There are three imperatives to grasp, when learning how to overcome ourselves.

1. I must _________________ God?s forgiveness for my past.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. 1 John 1:9 [NLT]

I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven. Philip. 3:13-14 [NLT]

I will forgive their wickedness and will never again remember their sins." Jeremiah 31:34 [NLT]

He canceled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ's cross. Col. 2:14 [NLT]

Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30 [NIV]

2. I must ___________________ God?s power in my present.

Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Ephes. 6:10 [NIV]

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes Romans 1:16 [NIV]

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 1 Cor. 4:20 [NIV]

The message about the cross doesn't make any sense to lost people. But for those of us who are being saved, it is God's power at work. 1 Cor. 1:18 [CEV]

Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God to those people God has called 1 Cor. 1:24 [NCV]

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you Acts 1:7-8 [NIV]

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 2 Cor. 12:9 [NIV]

Although he died on the cross in weakness, he now lives by the mighty power of God. We, too, are weak, but we live in him and have God's power 2 Cor. 13:4 [NLT]

May you have the power to understand, as all God?s people should, how wide, how long, how high and how deep His love really is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it. Then you will be filled with the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now glory be to God! By His mighty power at work in us, He is able to accomplish infintely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope. Ephes. 3:18-20 [NLT]

Jesus has the power of God, by which he has given us everything we need to live and to serve God. We have these things because we know him. 2 Peter 1:3 [NCV]

3. I must ______________ in God?s promises for my future.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Tim. 1:7 [NKJV]

From such terrible dangers of death he saved us, and will save us; and we have placed our hope in him that he will save us again, 2 Cor. 1:10 [TEV]

Hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. Romans 5:5 [NIV]

Since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 2 Cor. 3:12 [NIV]

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Romans 15:4 [NIV]

I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, Ephes. 1:18 [NIV]

Have your minds ready for action. Keep alert and set your hope completely on the blessing which will be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:13 [TEV]

In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. 1 Peter 3:15 [NIV]
